DBT Clinics provide a range of comprehensive DBT Programs from our locations in Brighton VIC, Mona Vale NSW and online! We are the private clinics of the Australian DBT Institute and have been running DBT Programs since 1999. Our Clinical Lead, Dr. Peter King (pictured right with DBT creator Marsha Linehan) was mentored by Marsha Linehan’s training, research and development company Behavioral Tech LLC between 2003 and 2008. Dr. King hosted and completed 2 DBT Intensive Training programs with Behavioral Tech LLC in Brisbane (2004) and Melbourne (2008) as well as DBT training in Michigan, USA (2006). Dr. King has also completed Radically Open Ltd’s Level 3 RO-DBT Practitioner Training and Intensive training and mentoring with Babette Rothschild in Somatic Trauma Therapy!

About our DBT Groups
Problematic behaviours evolve as a way to cope with a situation or attempt to solve a problem. While such behaviours provide temporary relief, they often result in conflict, pain and overwhelm in the long-term. The function of DBT Skills Groups is to support enhance an individual’s capabilities to replace problematic behaviours with more skillful means of coping.
There are four sets of skills taught in our DBT groups:

Individual Therapy in DBT

DBT Clinics run up to 10 adult DBT groups each week. Individuals are allocated to groups that are the best fit for the individual requesting a referral to our DBT groups.
Current group participants are considered when making new referrals and allocations to each DBT group.

Our Online DBT Clinic Groups are run on DBT Assist.
Are you a carer, family member, partner or friend of someone who has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and/or extreme emotional dysregulation? If you are, C-DBT is a program that can provide you with support and practical skills to effectively embrace compassion and wisdom each day to fully experience and participate in life!
– Group Location: Online group
– Time & Day: Thursdays at 6pm (VIC time)
– Group Duration: Weekly sessions of 90 minutes duration
– Weekly Fees: $65 per group session
– To decrease life-threatening behaviours (e.g. self-injurious behaviour, suicidal thoughts, family violence, threats and/or attempts)
– To increase personal coping skills
– Improve quality of life
– Improve overall stabilisation and capacity to engage further therapy (if individuals choose to engage in deeper therapy)
– Attend weekly group sessions and individual therapy sessions (individual sessions can continue to be with your existing therapist)
– 2-3 weeks leave in between each 9-week module
– Complete weekly homework tasks (homework task identified in group each week & watch at least one skills training video within 48 hours of group)
– Abide by the guidelines of the program including: not entering relationships with other participants, not attending intoxicated or hungover and being on time (see DBT Group Guidelines in this section)
– Payment of weekly fees for individual therapy (negotiate with your individual therapist) and group is charged on a module or fortnightly basis
DBT Group Inclusion Criteria:
– Individuals who have an existing individual therapist or would like to receive individual therapy via Telehealth through the Australian DBT Institute or our partners
– Individuals who experience several of the following:
– Life-threatening behaviours
– Quality-of-life interfering behaviours
– Recurrent suicidal thoughts or attempts
– Difficulty in interpersonal relationships
– Frequent mood swings
– Intense fear of abandonment
– Sense of emptiness or confusion about self
– Family conflict
DBT Group Exclusion Criteria:
– Individuals who are actively suicidal, homicidal or in need of crisis management rather than stabilisation work
– When the safety of facilitators or participants cannot be assured
– Individuals with active episodes of psychosis, visual and/or auditory hallucinations which impact functioning
– Individuals with cognitive impairment which impacts capacity for insight and new learning
Referral Options & Fees for individuals interested in DBT Groups
Our DBT Clinics welcome referrals from GPs, Psychiatrists and other health professionals. Individual are able to self-refer to our programs as well.
Fees will depend on your payment method:
– Private Fee-for-Service from $65 per session (discount offered for upfront payments and individuals must commit to paying for a full module even if they choose not to attend any session, RO DBT Skills Classes are $110 per session).
– Mental Health Plans from $65 per session (RO DBT Skills Classes are are $110 per session). Please note that mental health plans will only cover 10 group sessions each calendar year
– NDIS & Work Cover will depend on your plan with sessions from $64.66 (RO DBT Skills classes are $110 per session)
